Last local veggie pick of the season ...
Last night while I was trying to come up with this weeks menu, I was also trying to figure out what to do for Sister #2's birthday. She was tentatively going out of town so nothing was planned for her till last night. Of course then the inspiration for this weeks menu came together with her favorite ingredients, and last of the local pick for the season as the frost this weekend will probably end what grows locally outside of green houses.
Sis2 (our parents should have named her Sage) has lived all over the world. She has studied in Germany, UK, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, California, Maryland, China, and.... When one looks up for the meaning of the word Savant, her picture should pop up. Seriously! Anyway, she is the one who exposed me to Indian, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cuisine. Between her and Papa, I learned not to be afraid of trying everything at least once specially when it came to fruits and veg.
You will see a few unusual ingredients in this week menu such as quince, persimmon, husk cherries, purple capsicum, Swiss chard, baby pak choi, celriac, and stewed cherries and I hope you will also not be afraid to try them once.When Sis#2 lived in LA, I moved in with her for about 6 months. She sometimes had longer shifts at work than I did. When I would get home before her I would try to put some concoction together for us to eat. As we were both on student budgets, many nights dinner involved an a package or two of ramen noodles which we used to get 10 for $1, and some sort of vegetable or legume.
One night when I got home before her, we were out of rice and ramen so I just chopped every veg in the fridge that could have been eaten raw and mixed with some herbs, toasted some bread and we called it dinner. From there on, that became her favorite salad hence "Susu's Favorite Salad". When I moved back to Va. and would go back to visit her in LA, she would always ask me to make that salad for her and that's why I thought it would be a good one to include on the menu this week.
Sis#2 loves Quince, husk cherries, apples, persimmon, barley, cherry rice, grass fed beef(new the last couple of years and she keeps trying to convince me add it to my diet :p ), and a few more ingredients that you will see on this weeks menu as well.
