Certain spices such as turmeric and saffron are commonly known to have medicinal properties. But there are spices that we use often or ones we neglect that are just as healthful. Yes, turmeric has been shown to reduce risk of Alzheimer's disease and brain cancer. Saffron has been shown to have antidepressant effect and help fight off brain disease such as Alzheimer's and dementia. But unless you are eating Ezie food regularly ;), or consciously use these spices in your diet, most western recipes don't include them.
Black Pepper on the other hand is one spice we all use regularly. Black pepper is rich in piperine, the pungent compound that triggers a sneeze when it hits the verve endings inside your nose. Studies show that piperine also triggers healing- energizing and protecting nearly every organ and system in your body. Piperine fights cancer, is anti-inflammatory and can stop destructive inflammation in cartilage cells. So don't hesitate to use your pepper grinder often.
Another one we use often is red pepper. Red/Chili peppers from which paprika, cayenne, red pepper flakes, Tabasco and other similar hot sauces are made, contain the super-spicy compound capssicin. This potent antioxidant helps neutralize cell-damaging free radicals. It also curbs appetite, raises body temp and may help kill cancer cells. It is also used as a topical pain reliever.
Ginger is widely used to treat nausea but it has so many other benefits as well. For example ginger is used as pain reliever in some Eastern Medicine practices. With it's asprin-like effects, ginger inhibits enzymes that are involved in the production of inflammatory hormones.
Anyway, I can go on and on about benefits of spices.... So, this weeks menu is inspired by spices common and not so common such as cumin, allspice, ginger, turmeric, saffron, black pepper, cayenne, red pepper flakes, coriander seeds, paprika, mustard seeds....
We are looking forward to cooking this weeks menu for you; and hope that you will be enjoying it as much as we will be preparing it.
