Halloween Menu at Our House...

Halloween menu at our house has been Pumpkin Soup and Shepherd's Pie (really cottage pie since it's made with beef and not lamb) for over 20 years. Kids are all grown now and no trick or treaters to fuss over. We hardly even get anyone knocking on our door anymore so husband and I end up eating all the candy for the next couple of months. Just what we need before the holiday overindulgence eh?!

I used to love walking around with my kids while sipping pumpkin soup from my insulated coffee cup. Now though the kids are all grown up, they are still hoping for the same menu and now for the past four Halloweens, we have been sharing the same menu with you. Hope you will enjoy it as much as our family has all these years.

Note: We have been squeezing carrot tops in some of our recipes.

We decided to do this due to the fact that they are packed with nutrients and since Mary is growing them, we know they are free of any pesticide or herbicide, or any other junk. They are even better than your average organic tops.Carrot greens/tops contain an impressive list of nutrients, including significant amounts of vitamin A, dietary fibre, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. There is no fat or cholesterol in these greens. They also contain vitamin K and various phenolic compounds and carotenoids, along with trace amounts of other antioxidants. Carrot tops have a peppery flavor, similar to arugula or parsley and can bring that same sort of spice to a range of dishes. These greens are packed with chlorophyll, a phytochemical that gives plants their green colour and pigmentation. Chlorophyll is an excellent source of magnesium, which promotes healthy blood pressure as well as strong bones and muscles, and has been noted to purify the blood, lymph nodes and adrenal glands. They are high in potassium, which can lower blood pressure, support your metabolism, and help prevent osteoporosis. People most at risk for heart disease are the ones who get too little potassium. What's more, carrot greens are rich in vitamin K, which is lacking in the carrot itself and is vital to bone health. They have also been noted to deter tumour growth. So eat your carrot tops, but only as long as they are organic. If they are sprayed with chemicals, the tops obviously get all the junk as the carrot itself is underground the top just sucks all the poison in. Happy Halloween!

As Always, what is local, organic, and what Mary is growing, has a lot to do with what is included on the menu. And we hope you will enjoy this weeks menu as much as we enjoy preparing it for you!

From everyone at Ezie and Emil... It's All about food...ENJOY!
