Sweet Valentine- When we started the discussion on the menu for next week, we thought we should make it Valentines Week Menu. First items that come to mind are honey, roses, chocolates, raspberries, truffles, pears poached in wine, and of course wine. Of course we also have to use some heart healthy ingredients and Laura was all over that. After we were done, staring at my several pages of scribble, I was looking for an inspiration. For some reason, I kept thinking of Hafiz and Shiraz.
Ancient City of Shiraz is located in southwest of Iran and is known for its poetry, literature, wine, gardens and flowers. A romantic city, in short. When Husband and I were courting(I am showing my age here), I would quote Hafiz's poetry in my notes and letters to him. So in the spirit of love and Valentine, I thought it would be fun to include a Shiraz inspired dish on the menu.
One of the dishes I remember having in Shiraz is called "Sugar Rice". It was a sweet and aromatic dish sprinkled with rose dust and petals with slivered pistachios. We happen to have some dried rose from Shiraz but I am pretty sure Sugar Rice is made with tons of sugar. For a healthier version, I thought we would sweeten it with dried apricots and a syrup we will be making from Sis#2's kumquat tree.
Anyway, we had fun putting together a heart healthy menu in the spirit of love.
“And still, after all this time, The sun never says to the earth, "You owe Me." Look what happens with A love like that, It lights the Whole Sky.” Hafiz
We hope you will enjoy these dishes as much as we enjoy preparing them for you.
