We Try to Buy Local, Seasonal, Organic...
You all know that we try to buy local, seasonal, organic, and non gmo as much as possible. I have to say during the cooler months, this is no easy task in Northern Virginia but now that the Farmers Markets are back in full swing, the gathering of glorious produce becomes a perfect weekend morning-fun activity. Yesterday morning I visited one of the local markets to make plans with one of my favorite farmers, Roberto, to get inspiration for this week's menu. Oh my goodness, so many GREENS...when I come back for my next life, I want to be a rabbit in Roberto's farm:).
I know I tell you this all the time but since yesterday was Earth Day, I figured it's an excuse to tell you again. Visit your local farmers markets whenever you can.
Not only it is fun, it is good for our mother Earth.
Why local Farmers Markets? -Chances are the food you are getting was picked that morning, or the day before. You can not get this freshness in supermarkets. - There is no packing involved- think about all the little plastic containers and bags that you would get your food in when buying from the store. Take your own reusable bags and eliminate all that garbage. - Knowing your food- get to know your farmers, you can ask them questions. I find that they all love to tell you all about what they grow. Ask them what kind of pesticide and herbicides they use. You can not do this at your local grocery store. Cleaner Air- Food miles not only consume energy, but they contribute to poor air quality. Buying locally grown produce can help reduce these food miles. - Buying local helps the local economy- This is a no brainer, the more we buy from our local farmers, the more jobs will be created for them locally.
We hope you will like this week's meals as much as we enjoy preparing them for you.
From everyone at Ezie and Emil... It's All about food!!!
